Do Dominants Really Need Aftercare?

Aftercare is a much debated topic among those who are into the rough and tumble play of BDSM. Whose responsible, what is needed and how long it should last are often discussed, but with the submissive in mind. Dominant aftercare is a phrase you almost never hear.

BDSM presentation well-received in Potsdam

Colonel Winslow is the alias of a man who enjoys very specific sexual experiences. He has the scenario all laid out in his mind: he plays the role of a secret agent for the C.I.A. on a mission to gather information about the elusive La Domaine Chateau. He sneaks around in the surrounding marshes only to be caught and "tortured" for information, as well as for being a very, very bad boy in general. This "torture" could involve anything from leather whips to leeches (yes, leeches); Colonel Winslow is ready for any punishment that Master R or Mistress Collette may privilege him. Though more elaborate and outlandish than the usual clientele at La Domaine, this is the type of sexual scenario described by Master R and Mistress Collette that scores of people hope to be realized at the world's oldest running BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, & SadoMasochism) chateau. It is the passion and livelihood of Master R and Mistress Collette, the managers of La Domaine Chateau of Rensselaer, NY, to realize these fantasies for men and women, rich and poor alike.
It was the purpose of the recent BDSM open forum here at SUNY Potsdam to bring the knowledge of these fantasies to light and hopefully shed some of the long-standing stigma of the BDSM lifestyle amongst the curious students in attendance. The forum was held on campus on the evening of March 30 in the Kellas 106. It was hosted by Lisa Bates, a student here at Potsdam. Two professional "dommes" by the names of Master R and Mistress Collette fielded all questions.
Rather than present a traditional prepared lecture, the two guest speakers decided to take an approach of an open question and answer forum. This allowed the many students in attendance (Kellas 106 was filled to capacity) to tailor the forum to their personal intellectual curiosities regarding the BDSM lifestyle. The two speakers made it very clear to the audience that the event was an open and free forum and that no questions regarding the BDSM lifestyle were off-limits. This forthrightness led to a wide array of questions regarding specific sexual fetishes, famous clientele served at the chateau, and even the personal sexual lives of the speakers themselves. All questions were answered with highly apparent and utmost honesty by Master R and Mistress Collette. Despite the opportunity to keep the lecture completely outlandish, most students asked questions implying a genuine curiosity regarding the BDSM lifestyle, and why people participate.
"We all come from 15,000 years of pharaohs and slaves," stated Master R, implying that the urge to dominate and the will to submit to each other is a part of our very fabric as modern human beings; it is in our nature. The difference between the past of "pharaohs and slaves" to the modern concept of dominating or submitting to a person out of love involves an evolution of the dominant and submissive dynamic.
"We have gone from involuntary servitude to voluntary submission." According to Master R, answering the many questions regarding why people would choose to submit to somebody to any extreme degree (say scrubbing the floors of La Domaine on one's hands and knees at the whim of a Master or Mistress). The conclusion given by Master R and Mistress Collette regarding the basic question of "Why BDSM" appeared to be that violent notions of domination and submission have evolved in the sexual hardwiring of many people to loving notions of the same principles.
On the whole, the forum was well-received. Questions went on for nearly three hours, with still dozens of students actively engaged in conversation with the presenters toward the end of the event.
"This [presentation] was excellently done." stated Patrick Harris, a Senior writing major. "I would say that it's important for students to know that this isn't the only approach to BDSM, but it's a well-thought-out and clearly well-established one. I was really impressed."

For students interested in the lifestyle, there was talk of starting a student club here at Potsdam on the subject after the lecture was concluded.
